Coffee Drinkers Go Whole Bean

Consumer Demand for Whole Coffee Beans Increases YoY

According to new data from ecommerce accelerator, Pattern, consumers have displayed an increasing preference for whole coffee beans from Q3 2023 – Q3 2024. With the increased demand for whole coffee beans, consumers have also shown elevated interest in grinders, brewing machines, and other coffee products, suggesting an overall shift toward making coffee at home.

Why it matters: With National Coffee Day on the horizon, there may be a notable decrease in consumers taking advantage of coffee specials at their preferred cafes as more people choose to make their brews at home.

What we’re seeing: Our team analyzed demand data for every day of 2023 and 2024 so far to understand what consumers were searching for the most when it comes to their favorite morning beverage. Within the coffee machine and accessories category, we found significant increases in demand for the following products year over year:

  • Demand for Drip Coffee Makers increased by 66% from Q3 2023 – Q3 2024
  • Espresso Machines +50%
  • Whole Coffee Beans +46%
  • Automatic Coffee Machines +44%
  • Coffee Beans Storage +20%

Which bean brands consumers prefer: With such a noticeable increase in demand for whole coffee beans, we wanted to understand which coffee brands were the most popular among consumers. Here are the coffee brands that saw the most significant increase in demand from Q3 2023 – Q3 2024:

  • Demand for Stumptown Coffee increased by 92% from Q3 2023 – Q3 2024
  • Keurig K-Cups +65%
  • Kicking Horse Coffee +45%
  • Caribou Coffee +14%
  • Café Bustelo +8%

Yes, but: Some coffee machines saw a drop in demand year over year, including:

  • Demand for Coffee Percolators decreased by 44% from Q3 2023 – Q3 2024
  • Cold Brew Coffee Makers -18%
  • Turkish Coffee Pots -15%
  • Travel Coffee Makers -10%
  • Coffee Spoons -3%

The takeaway: As National Coffee Day approaches on September 19, cafes may experience decreased traffic from consumers as they show an increasing preference for brewing their coffee at home. With the rise in interest for at-home brewing solutions, ecommerce retailers should ensure they are prepared to satisfy the increased demand by stocking up on consumers’ favorite machines and coffee bean brands.
