St. Patrick’s Day Costs More Green in 2024

Many Popular St. Patrick’s Day Products Exceed the Rate of Inflation

As the number-one week of the year for beer and whiskey demand approaches, prices for some of the most popular St. Patrick’s Day products have increased year over year according to new data from e-commerce accelerator, Pattern.

Why it matters: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported that the cost of consumer goods across all categories has risen 3.1% year over year. However, when looking at the most commonly purchased St. Patrick’s Day products, our data shows an average increase in price of 4%, meaning consumers will need more green than usual to celebrate the luck of the Irish.

What we’re seeing: Our data science team analyzed pricing data on Amazon during every day of 2023 and 2024 so far to understand what the shopping landscape will look like for consumers ahead of St. Patrick’s Day this year. Here’s how prices for some of the most commonly purchased St. Patrick’s Day party items have changed year over year:

  • Corned Beef has increased in price by 12% from 2023 – 2024
  • Beer +9%
  • Green Clothing +5%
  • Irish Whiskey +4%
  • Gin +4%
  • Soda Bread +2%
  • Potatoes +2%

Yes, but: Some St. Patrick’s Day products have experienced either no change or inflation reversal. Here are the lucky few products that have avoided significant price increases over the past year:

  • Green Food Coloring had no change in price from 2023 – 2024
  • Chocolate Coins -1%
  • Cabbage -1%

The takeaway: Throwing a St. Patrick’s Day party could set shoppers back more than usual as many of the most popular party items have increased in price year over year. While some products have been spared from the sting of inflation, consumers can expect to pay 4% more on average to celebrate the day.
